Children & Young Adult Authors & Illustrators Internet Index - An index of links to webpages about specific authors & illustrators.
Contemporary Authors This biographical reference of 120,000 U.S. and international authors is a subscription database that Norwalk Library subscribes to. It is accessed using your Norwalk Library card number and is limited to one user at a time. If it is busy please try again later.

Power to Learn  - This student site by Cablevision has games, homework help, financial aid and scholarship information.
QuickMath - "An automated service for answering common math problems in algebra, equations, and calculus."  A great way to check your the answers on your math homework.

Saints Index - A short description of the Catholic Saints. Also on this site are a listing of Patron Saints, Popular Saints and a Feastday list.
Sourcebook Online of Criminal Justice Statistics - Data from more than 100 sources about all aspects of the United States criminal justice. Data is displayed in tables from Sourcebook 2001.
Statistical Abstracts - From the U.S. Census Bureau this website has statistical data covering 1878-2006.

 AskOxford- This site contains a word of the day, quote of the week, sound bites, writing help, a jargon buster, collective terms for animals, frequently asked questions about grammar, spelling, symbols and word origins. There is also a section with word games and the history of Scrabble, an ask the experts section and family history.
Blue Book Of Grammar - Easy to understand grammar rules with examples of each.
Citing Sources - Duke University's guide to citing sources in your research paper using MLA, APA, Chicago Manual of Style, and Turabian.
Slate Citation Machine - A free service from the Landmark Project that does citations in both the MLA and APA styles.

AP Photo - Associated Press Image Archive- Over 750,000 photos and graphics from news worldwide. A Connecticut Library card is required to login into the database from home. After logging in scroll down to the 'Photograph' section and click on Associated Press Image Archive.
Images of American Political History -  A collection of 500 public domain images form 1750 to 1950.
NASA Image Gallery - A large variety of  images.
NYPL Picture Collection Online - From the New York Public Library a collection of 30,000 public domain pictures from books, magazines and newspapers mostly created before 1923. Includes images of New York, American History, costume and much more.
Planetary Photojournal - NASA's planetary images from all available satellites.

Country Studies

American Fact Finder- U.S. Census information on population, economic, housing and geographic data.
Background Notes - This site from the US Department of State contains..  "...information on all the countries of the world with which the United States has relations.  They include facts on the country's land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and its relations with other countries and the United States." 
BBC News Country Studies - "Full profiles provide an instant guide to history, politics and economic background of countries. They also include audio and video clips from the BBC archives."
CNNfyi - "News for students, resources for teachers." A combined effort by CNN Interactive and Turner Learning to provide a place - 'To help educators and students keep pace with the world's volatile and ever-changing geographic, scientific and political landscapes.' Students will find here multimedia news stories about U.S. and world events, and features on  sports, entertainment and science & technology.
Country Studies - This site from the Library of Congress contains information about 101 of the lesser known countries and regions of the world.
CIA World Fact Book - Country information including climate, people, politics, economics, education, maps, charts, statistics and much more.
Data by Country - From the World Bank Group - Country at a Glance Tables, Data Profile tables, Information and communications technologies statistics, Edstats, which has statistics about education around the world, (HNPStats) 
Health, Nutrition, and Population Statistics, GenderStats, and much more.
Geography IQ - A world atlas with geographic, economic, political, historical and cultural information. Also includes maps, currency converter, rankings, flags, current time in major cities and much more.
Lands and Peoples - Grolier's online country database which includes an encyclopedia, atlas, cultural cross, global news stories, an almanac and Passport, the gaming section.
United Nations Cyberschoolbus - The InfoNation section of this site has country statistics on population, economy, technology, environment and health that can be compared to up to four other countries. The Country At A Glance section has basic country maps, statistics and links to news sources for individual countries.
U.S. State Department Travel Warnings & Consular Information Sheets - This site contains warnings issued by the State Department when Americans should avoid traveling in certain areas of the world. Consular Information sheets are available for every country and contain facts about the country, entry requirements, security information, health conditions and much more.

    Africa

Art of the African Mask - An exhibit at Bayly Art Museum. Each image has a description explaining the name of the mask, where the mask is from, who created it and its purpose.
African Studies Center - A University of Pennsylvania site that has a multitude of resources on Africa.  The 'Multimedia Archives' have a wealth of images on African sculpture, maps, people and places and more. The 'Country-Specific Pages' have links relating to each individual country in Africa.

     Egypt

Ancient Egypt - This British Museum site is a wonderful combination of storytelling, pictures, graphic and interactive media about the life, culture, geography, gods, mummies, pharaohs, pyramids and temples of ancient Egypt.
Ancient Near East Culture and Death - A list of links from About.com on funeral and death rites in ancient cultures.

Egypt, Secrets of an Ancient World - National Geographic and PBS collaborated on this site which ties in with their TV shows, 'Egypt: Secret Chambers Revealed' and 'Egypt Eternal: The Quest for the Lost Tombs.'
Gods and Mythology of Ancient Egypt - Information on the ancient gods of Egypt.
Tour Egypt - This site has information on both ancient and modern Egypt, including the history, photos, gods, recipes, and much more.

    Food

America the Bountiful - An exhibit by the University of California, Davis, Nutrition Department showing how common American foods continue to play a major role in American culture.
Food Guide Pyramid - The Food and Nutrition Information Center has many different food pyramids including bilingual, and cultural ones. There are printable graphic pyramids for school projects and  other activities involving nutrition and the food pyramid.
Food TimeLine - This site created by the staff of the Morris County Public Library has the dates when foods, such as salt, oysters and chewing gum, were first introduced into our diet. The names of the foods are links to more information about that particular food and on the right of the timeline are period recipes. A great place to start for reports on foods of a particular time.
Global Destinations - Recipes and facts about the cuisine of 36 countries around the world.

      Greek & Roman

Classics Unveiled - Greek & Roman Gods, Roman History, culture and the Latin language.
Greek Mythology - Greek names vs. Roman names, origins of Greek myth, and information on the immortals as well a links to other mythology sites.
MythWeb - Devoted to the Heroes, Gods and monsters of Greek Mythology.
Roman Empire - First Century - Companion website to PBS series.

      Middle Ages

Medieval Instruments - This site features pictures, histories, and sound files of a variety of medieval instruments from the bagpipe to the zink.
Middle Ages - Find out what live was like in the Middle Ages. This site is divided into to topics Feudal Life, Religion, Homes, Clothing, Health, Arts, and Town Life. It also includes links to other sites about the Middle Ages.

I Hear America Sing - Library of Congress website that has Patriotic melodies, historic sheet music, and information on the musical life of Cincinnati in the Mid-late 1880s.

      Mythology Around the World

      Godchecker - Meet the Gods from different cultures around the world in this fun and informative site.  Search by the God's name or by major attribute, such as, trickery, chaos, sea, sky, etc. Extensive bibliography in the reference library.

       Native Americans

Native Americans - A directory of links from the Ancient American cultures of the Aztecs and Incas to Native American tribes, arts and crafts, history. 
 

Current Issues

Learning Network - This site by the New York Times is for students in grades 3 to 12, teachers and parents. It contains current and historical news summaries, quizzes and crossword puzzles, lesson plans, family movie guides and much more.
Social Issues - A collection of websites with opposing viewpoints on today's social issues from abortion to world population. These links have been created by the librarians at the Multnomah County Library.

Government

CIA World Factbook - Need to know facts about a country such as the population, economy, government, geography and climate? Then this is the website to go to first.
First Amendment Center - Learn about current issues involving the First Amendment, the history of the First Amendment, and analysis/commentary.
This Nation -  Current political events and links as well as the full text of historical documents, pictures of all the US presidents, and much more.
U.S. Medal of Honor Citations
- The full citations for those receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor from the Civil War to Somalia. This site also includes a  history of the medal.
Presidents' Hall - The White House website of  biographies on all  United States Presidents and their wives.
Presidents of the United States - Biographical information, presidential and academic library links, genealogy of the presidents' families, nicknames and much more.

American History Online- A Facts on File Online database containing biographies, events & topics, primary sources, timeline, image gallery, and maps and charts.
Connecticut History - Connecticut State Library state history links from Native Americans to post World War II.
Congressional History - This site has the number of republicans and democrats from the first to the 106th congress, who was president and vice-president and more.
Cuban Missile Crisis - This National Security Agency site includes a timeline of the crisis, full synopsis and a document archive.
dMarie Time Capsule - On this day in history- Discover the headlines, birthdays, songs, TV programs, toys and books on any selected day from the years 1800 to 2001.
History Place - From the American Revolution to Genocide in the Twentieth Century this site has concise timelines of major historical events, pictures, audio and much more. The editors of Britannica Encyclopedia have rated it a top internet site "when reviewed for quality, accuracy of content, presentation and usability...
Immigration: Stories of Yesterday and Today - From the people at Scholastic, this site has information on past immigrants and well as those of today. An Ellis Island interactive section and an oral history.

    "These two institutions are developing a thematically-related digital library documenting American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction." They have scanned in images of entire books and journals from 1850 to 1900.
The Papers of George Washington from the University of Virginia. This site includes maps & portraits, documents and articles and much more.
Three Mile Island: The Inside Story - America's worst accident at a civilian nuclear power plant on March 28, 1979 near Harrisburg, PA.
U.S. History - Created by the Independence Hall Association this site has historical information on Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross, America's longest mile and much more. The Betsy Ross page also contains information on the US Flag including a timeline of its development.
Valley Forge Muster Roll - From the Valley Forge Historical Park a searchable database of the men at Valley Forge.
Valley of the Shadow -
 A University of Virginia project that compares two towns, one north the other south, before, during, and after the civil war by their newspapers, diaries, letters, maps, census records and much more.

African Heritage Project - "Our mission is to rediscover precious records that document the names and lives of former slaves, freedpersons and their descendants, and share those records on this free Internet site."

John Brown's Holy War - This PBS companion site follows the life and actions of
abolitionist John Brown. It includes maps, timeline, people, events and a teacher's guide.
Powerful Days: the Civil Rights Photography of Charles Moore -  A photojournalist for Life Magazine during the late 1950's and early 1960's Moore has captured the civil rights movement in his photos.
Dred Scott Digital Project - The Washington University has digital images of the documents in the Dred Scott case, a chronology of events and links to other sites about the case.
"The Scottsboro Boys" Trials - Chronology, biographies, the trials, images, links and a bibliography from Professor Linder at the University of Missouri-Kansas.

Civil War

American Civil War Homepage - A directory of links ranging from general resources to images and battles. A good resource for anyone interested in the Civil War.
Civil War Interactive - Find out historical information on the civil war as well as current information on historic civil war sites.
Military History Online - Details, maps, troop movements and much more on this site dealing with the battles of Gettysburg, Fredericksburg and Antietam. More battle sites will be included in the future.

World History

Anne Frank the Writer--An Unfinished Story - From the US Holocaust Memorial Museum an online exhibition of Anne Frank's original writings. It is a combination of audio and animation so visitors experience Anne's essays and diary entries read aloud along with photographs of Anne and her family. (Shockwave is needed to view)
Best of History Web Sites - A wide variety of history sites, rated for usefulness and accuracy, to help educators and students in their studies.
Center for History & New Media - An extensive history collection combining history and digital media from George Mason University.
eHistory - This site from Ohio State University's History Department  is for history students, fans and enthusiasts. It includes 5300 timeline events, 800 battle outlines, 350 biographies, and thousands of images and maps.
Eyewitness to History - From Pliny at Pompeii to Roosevelt in Africa, this simply indexed Web site brings you descriptions of events from the people who experienced them.
Famous Trials - This site by Professor Douglas Linder from the University of Missouri-Kansas has detailed information on many famous trials, including the Rosenberg Trial, Scopes 'Monkey' Trial, Nuremberg Trials, My Lai Court Martial, and the OJ Simpson Trial.
Footnotes to History - This site features information on the nations you don't learn about in high school. Such as the "Republic of' Rough and Ready' a town in gold rush California that seceded from the Union over taxes in 1850 (and rejoined the next year). Extensive bibliography.

History Channel: Audio & Video - Speeches on subjects as diverse as politics, science, diplomacy and entertainment. Videos include this day in history, historical icons, military & war, arts & society, and science & technology.  Each video clip includes a written description of the video.
