Alternative Medicine -

An Illustrated Herbal - Pictures and information on over 500 herbs. Alphabet at the top of the page allows browsing by the name of the herb and information includes where to find it, medicinal purposes and modern uses. Icons at the bottom of the page are links to other useful information, and the triangle/eye icon leads to a symptom search engine.

Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, 2005

 Herbs, Botanicals & Other Products - A database from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Information on each substance contains a list of contents, scientific name and common name, clinical summary, drug interaction, purported uses and adverse reaction, as well as, a bibliography of articles concerning the botanical.

Herbal Safety - The University of Texas at El Paso and Austin Cooperative Pharmacy Program have created a website about herbal safety. The site includes herbal fact sheets from Aloe to Wormwood. Click on the name of the herb to get a picture of the herb, where it is found, it's uses, safety hazards and possible drug interactions. Also on the site are extensive scientific monographs, publication and scientific presentations.

America's Best Hospitals - The 2008 edition of U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals. Arranged by specialties and ranked within those specialties. Links to hospital websites are included.

Caregiver - The online home of the print magazine Today's Caregiver. Plenty of articles and advice on caring for yourself as well as a loved one. 

Free Medical Journals - "..created to promote the free availability of full text medical journals on the Internet."

Herb Research Foundation - A nonprofit organization that has over a 150,000 articles, and up to date information on herbs plus historical information on herbs.

HIghWire Press of Stanford University -  "..the largest archive of free full-text science on Earth! As of 4/21/09, we are assisting in the online publication of 1,896,685 free full-text articles and 5,689,075 total articles. There are 17 sites with free trial periods, and 44 completely free sites. 277 sites have free back issues, and 1145 sites have pay per view!"

Medicaid Resource Book - "...describes four pivotal aspects of how the Medicaid program operates -- who it covers, what it covers, how it is financed, and how it is administered." by the Kaiser Foundation.

Medical News Today -"...updated with more than 60 articles every day, 7 days a week - more than any other health news site. The site is divided into 101 medical categories/specialties allowing you to browse only the news relevant you. Advanced news archive searches allow you to quickly find the articles you want."

National Network of Libraries of Medicine - Links to directories with many free medical E-journals with full text articles. Many of these are health professional journals, however, others are for consumers. The 'Selected list of free Ejournals' is a particularly good directory for laymen articles.

PubMed Central - is the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.

Rick Mendosa's Diabetes Directory - a directory of web pages with articles about diabetes and links to internet resources on diabetes.  The author is a "freelance journalist and consultant specializing in writing about diabetes, which he and his wife both have."

State Health Facts - This Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation site contains the latest state-level data on demographics, health and health policy. Individual states can be compared to the country overall, as well as comparisons by subject category. State websites and officials are included.

Clinical Trials -

CenterWatch - Clinical trial listing service that has 41,000 industry and government sponsored clinical trials. The site also has a listing of FDA recently approved drugs.

Diet Information -

Lose Weight - Information on popular diets, diet pills, diet programs, and surgery. Also included are links to current medical news relating to diet.

Drug Information -

Drugs.com  - This site allows you to look up medications to check possible interactions with each other or with foods or supplements, and an image database for identifying medications.

eLetter - up-to-date information on drugs for severe psychiatric illnesses. This site is a joint project between the Public Citizen and the Treatment Advocacy Center.

HerbMed - Need to know about a particular medicinal herb? This site will tells what condition it is used to treat, clinical trials that have been run on it and has links to relevant articles on the Medline site.

MedWatch - This site has the latest drug safety information put out by the Federal Drug Administration, as well as recalls, changes in drug labeling, market withdrawals and other notifications ordered by the FDA.

National Institute on Drug Abuse - Information on drug abuse and drugs for professionals, parents, teachers and students.

Street Drugs - Information and articles on common street drugs arranged by topic and audience. Contains a drug index.

Worst Pills - A website by Public Citizen's Health Research Group whose ".... primary focus  is working to ban or re-label unsafe or ineffective drugs and to encourage greater transparency and accountability in the drug approval process."

American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging Directory - Find assisted living units, nursing care, independent living, home and community based services, and adult day care services throughout the United States.

CT Healthcare Facility/Agency Information - Search for a licensed nursing home, information on choosing a facility and compare nursing homes.

Myziva.net - "is a free, objective and easy-to-use nursing home resource for prospective residents, caregivers and healthcare professionals. We help you find and compare nursing homes."

NIH Senior Health - Health and wellness information for older adults from the National Institutes of Health.

Family Health -

American Obesity Association - Information on research, prevention, treatment, consumer protection and discrimination of obesity.

Hardin Meta Directory - A directory of the "best sites that list the sites" on medical information. This directory is from the University of Iowa's Health department.

Calorie King - Articles, recipes, a weight loss program, and a database containing the nutritional information on over 40,000 foods including 200 fast food restaurant chains. Find out the calories, fats, carbs. and proteins of your favorite foods. The food database is updated daily. For anyone on a special diet this is a wonderful resource.

Cancer.gov - Recent and accurate information from the National Cancer Institute. Includes information on the different types of cancer, treatment, support groups, clinical trials and much more.

CancerIndex - A guide to internet resources for cancer. Searchable or use the topic index to find websites about a particular type of cancer

Center for Mental Health - Information for anyone interested in mental health from patients to policymakers. The Database area gives resources by state and the links area categorizes the web links by topic. There is also a kids section that has games and kid related mental health.

disABILITY Information & Resources - Extensive list of disability links sorted by category. Including medical information, support groups, resources, shopping and politics.

Dr. Greene's Housecalls - Dr. Greene, a board certified pediatrician will answer questions by email. This site also contains the questions and answers sent to him by email and access to a pediatric encyclopedia.

Family Care America - This site is full of resources for caring for a family member. From checklists and forms to locating local resources this website has it all.

HealthNet - Connecticut consumer health information network. Tips on researching medical questions, internet resources, and a database of health articles from the New York Times.

IntelliHealth - Harvard School of Medicine's consumer health information.

Lung Cancer Online - "is a gateway to lung cancer resources for the benefit of people with lung cancer and their families.  It is intended to facilitate the time consuming and often frustrating process of learning about lung cancer, treatment options and support services." General information on lung cancer, treatment options, tests, complications, and where the best facilities and support groups are located have all been included in this informative site.             

Medical Test Guides - WebMD's a to z guide of medical tests explains what a test is for, how it is done and how the patient can prepare for the test.

MedlinePlus -"..up-to-date, quality health care information from the world’s largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health" This site is for the consumer as well as medical professionals and has current information on diseases, conditions, wellness, a medical encyclopedia, drug information, medical dictionaries, and directories of the location and credentials of doctors and dentists. 

Melanoma Patient's Information Page - “The Melanoma Patients' Information Page (MPIP) is a noncommercial site founded to provide support and information to melanoma patients and those who care for them." It includes a tutorial on how to tell between melanoma and other skin cancers or lesions. 

Merck Manual - Explains disorders, who gets them, how to diagnose, prevention and treatment.

Merck Manual of Geriatrics - A full text searchable manual that has information on nursing care, pharmacy issues, discussions of the best drugs for the elderly, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, rehabilitation, respiratory failure, and managed care.

Mesothelioma - “Public Information about asbestos, mesothelioma cancer and mesothelioma treatment options."

Mesothelioma Web - A rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Includes information on causes, symptoms, treatment, diagnosis and stages of the disease.

National Women's Health Information Center This site has information on women's health issues from birth control to hormone replacement, as well as,  special sections for college women and men's health.

NOAH - New York Online Access to Health has links to information on diseases, conditions and personal health issues in both English and Spanish.

North American Menopause Society - "...The North American Menopause Society, the leading nonprofit scientific organization devoted to promoting understanding of menopause, and thereby improving the health of women through midlife and beyond." Included here are consumer and professional resources, referral lists, events and the latest research.

Nutrition.gov - The federal governments online source for nutrition information, nutrition and food assistance programs, and links to federally supported research, reports and brochures. There are also images of the food pyramid.

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Database - "...evaluates and accredits more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States."

Medical Dictionary - Find out exactly what the medical term the doctor used means in easy to understand language. This site is continually updated to include the most recent terms.

RateMD's - allows patients to rate and read about their doctors.

Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator -  Searches by city, state or zipcode or does advanced searches by type of facility and location.

AMA Health Insight - This site is geared for the consumer looking for comprehensive information on a variety of health issues. Included is an interactive health section that lets you record health histories or customize a fitness program. 

American Medical Association - A wealth of information for consumers and physicians on health topics, journals, medical science and more. 

Medscape Today - A gateway to consumer health resources by Medscape.

Connecticut Clearinghouse - "A library and resource center on alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, mental health and wellness." Includes statistics by town on population, crime, drug abuse, family, and education.

Connecticut Department of Health - Physician profiles, Regulatory Action Reports, Public Health Code, Statistics and much more.

 Discovery Health - From the Discovery Channel a searchable site that has current health news, articles by physicians in the Expert Opinion section, Diseases and Conditions, and links to other references, such as, MEDLINE and clinical trials. The Health Tools section has calculators for determining calories burned by activities, basal metabolic rate, blood alcohol content and much more.

Gateway - The National Library of Medicine's search engine finds articles, books, and other sources of medical information searching in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). The current Gateway searches MEDLINE/PubMed, OLDMEDLINE, LOCATORplus, MEDLINEplus, DIRLINE, AIDS Meetings, Health Services Research Meetings, Space Life Sciences Meetings, and HSRProj.'
