  7. An Education in the Grotesque: The Gargoyles of Yale University by Mathew Duman Author speak

    Mathew Duman, author of An Education in the Grotesque: The Gargoyles of Yale University will be at the Library on Saturday, October 4th at 2 pm. Please find information attached in a zip file. Mathew Duman grew up in Bethany, Connecticut. He attended the gargoyle-free campus of Central Connecticut State University but while studying abroad, developed a fascination with the grotesque sculptures of the cathedrals of Britain. After taking additional photographic trips to Italy, Africa, Australia & New Zealand, Matt returned to the New Haven area & works as a photographer & graphic designer at the Knights of Columbus headquarters. As a personal project, Matt has explored the variety of sculpture found on the buildings of Yale University and has researched and documented these "new world" grotesques which are closer, but no less bewitching than their European counterparts.

    Nina Et cetera, one of the wonderful duos who performed in the The Sounds of Summer at the Library series will be back at the Norwalk Public Library to help us inaugurate and celebrate our Sunday opening on Sunday, October 19th at 3:00 pm. Their program will be: This Train is Bound for Glory: What does Elvis, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, James Brown, Al Green, Ray Charles, and Smokey Robinson all have in common? That would be gospel music! The performance includes gospel songs from many decades of the black and white traditions.     The Friends of the Norwalk Public Library are sponsoring a Concert on Saturday, October 25th at 3:00 pm with Richard, "Cookie" Thomas in the Main Level Reading Room in celebration of their Book Sale. Cookie performed this summer as part of The Sounds of Summer at the Library series. His career began in Philadelphia in 1960 when he had the opportunity, at fourteen, to open for B.B. King. Cookie's voice is especially suited to well-known classic standards. He draws inspiration from the likes of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Johnny Hartman.
