Girl Rising: A Powerful Film About Female Education

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

The Norwalk Public Library and the Norwalk Education Foundation are teaming up to bring the new film 'Girl Rising' to the South Norwalk Branch Library, 10 Washington Street, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2013. It is a fact that girls from across the globe face barriers to education that boys simply do not.  Sixty-six million are currently out of school;150 million are sexually assaulted each year; and in the past 30 seconds, about 13 were forced into arranged marriages.  It is statistics like these that inspired this film, a documentary-narrative hybrid about nine extraordinary girls from around the world and the opportunities afforded them by education.  Each segment stars a real girl acting out an episode from her own life. The scripts were written by novelists from the girls' home countries--Afghanistan, Cambodia, Haiti, Peru, to name a few--and then narrated by actresses Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington and more.  This is an nontraditional model, but a film you won't want to miss.  Registration is available online or by calling 203 899-2780 x15902.

This program is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.
